The grass is always greener….on the golf course

HISTORY

In January 1992 our founding Member, Greg Markson, placed a sign at the Residents Club to see if anyone was interested in starting up a golf society in DB. Greg contacted one of the interested parties, Andrew Moore, and later that month held their first get together. At that meeting were four people -Greg, Andrew, Barry Harris, and Godfrey Martin.

Andrew became the first Chairman, Godfrey became the Treasurer, Barry became the Match Captain and Greg became the Handicap Sec. This group remained until the inaugural AGM on 22 September 1993 where several other positions were added Secretary (David Parry), Social Secretary (Belinda Harris) and Publicity Co-coordinator (Winnie Roots).

Over the years the Society has seen some notable events: one of the most memorable was our winning the Inter-society trophy for the third consecutive year in 1994. We were allowed to keep the trophy and you can see it in the Trophy cabinet at DBGC (a large crystal bowl). This feat was never repeated as the competition sadly no longer exists.

Many people have come and gone over the years and two people were made lifetime members of the society: Andrew Moore who went to Australia and Roger Sweet who went to the UK . One other person who was very instrumental to the society was Steve Taylor who became the society's  first auditor in late 1993. (currently Janelle Weber)

As we move into 2016 we have much to be thankful for, notwithstanding the support we get from Discovery Bay Golf Club to whom we are eternally grateful.

Long may it continue......
